James Wilkins

James Wilkins

3rd Line Engineer

My Fasthosts career

I joined Fasthosts in 2004 as a Technical Support Advisor - eight months later I had been promoted to 2nd Line support dealing with escalated customer issues and day to day administration tasks for the hosting platform. In December 2005 I was promoted to 3rd Line Engineer - These guys handle the senior administration tasks for the NOC. We work closely with our R&D team for the implementation of new technologies and also on platform-wide issues with our hosting/dedicated platforms. I'm happy with how my career has progressed so far and I'm currently working out my training requirements to get industry recognised certifications in my field of work. Prior to Fasthosts I worked as a senior systems administrator for a London based new media company.

Fasthosts – the best thing

I've been with Fasthosts just over two years and have already been promoted to my ideal job. The company is a fast-paced environment where opportunities are there to be made for the right people. My technical knowledge and exposure to new technologies has expanded considerably. The people at Fasthosts are also a large part of what makes it a refreshing change from the normal mundane 9-5 work place, whilst everyone is professional in nature - we all know when to relax and have fun - you only have to read about our Christmas parties to learn of this!

Fasthosts – the worst thing

Working for a fast-paced company such as Fasthosts has it down-sides! Being a Senior Engineer and getting called out for a platform-wide issue means you have to resolve the issue as quickly as possible with the minimal customer impact. You need to have a sound head and be able to focus on the issue at hand when under pressure.

About me

Besides my interest in computers, I have two little boys which take up the majority of my free time - They've just entered the troublesome 5-6 year old stage! I hold an interest in other countries' cultures and their ways of life. I've been to most places in and around Europe and now I'm working out plans to visit Japan some time next year.

Internal Systems Engineer

My Fasthosts career

I joined in 2004 as a Technical Support Advisor and following an assessment in 2005, I was promoted to the role of Internal Systems Engineer where I am responsible for supporting and developing the internal technical infrastructure. My early career aspirations were always focused towards engineering having successfully completed an honours degree in Engineering at Sheffield Hallam University. The degree course included an invaluable industrial placement which further developed my interest in and naturally led to a career path into IT.

Fasthosts – the worst thing

Admittedly Gloucester was not on my list of cities that I had in mind when searching for progression within the IT industry but the prospects of working with Fasthosts quickly changed that. Looking back, it was remarkable how rapidly I settled into 'Fasthosts-life' and have been lucky to have made some great friends in the process.

About me

I try to live as active a lifestyle as possible, which includes taking part in a range of activities and sports but to be honest I seem to watch a lot more sports from the comforts of my sofa than actually playing! I'm also a keen member of my local community and enjoy participating, and organising cultural events with friends & family.

Finance Assistant

My Fasthosts career

I was one of the first people to join Fasthosts in September 1999. I was hired as the Customer Accounts Assistant, where I dealt with all billing queries the customers had. I remained in that position until 2005, when I was offered the position of Finance Assistant. As I had never had any experience in this field before, I spoke to my manager to see if I could enrol on a college course to help me understand my new role in more detail and gain a professional qualification - I am now working towards an AAT.

Fasthosts – the best thing

I have been with the company from the start. In the beginning there were only a handful of staff members. As the company has grown over the last seven years I have seen massive change - but some things have remained the same, like the friendly atmosphere and the support we receive from other members of staff/managers.

Fasthosts – the worst thing

For me it would have to be the social aspect, currently we have a football team that play in the week and I have thought about joining it, but when some of them come in the next day with twisted ankles and bruised legs I always decline!

About me

I enjoy horse riding and am a regular visitor to the Comedy Club in Bristol.
